Description
Using data from the National Crime Victimization Survey, Santana expands upon previous research by including not only sexual assaults and rapes in the analysis but also robbery and physical assaults. Her results reveal that the effectiveness of self-protective behaviors varied by the type of victimization. One noteworthy finding was that nonforceful verbal self-protective behaviors (e.g., pleading or stalling) were ineffective across all four types of victimization. In addition, the results suggest that the effectiveness of self-protective behaviors varied by the nature of the victim/offender relationship. The findings suggest that to effectively resist violent victimization, victims may need to respond differently depending upon the type of crime and their relationship with the offender.
